How Couples Check-Ins Work

Video 3.2 — Your First Couples Check-In — coming soon to the Lens tab.

You're ready to do your first check-in together — or you want to understand the rhythm before you commit to it. Here's exactly how the process works, from opening the app to seeing your combined report.

The Check-In Flow

  1. On check-in day, both partners open the Chosen tab in the app. Each partner will see a prompt to begin their individual check-in.
  2. Each partner completes their check-in independently — your responses are private, and you don't see each other's entries while completing them.
  3. Once both partners have submitted, the combined report generates automatically. You'll each receive an in-app notification when it's ready.

The whole process takes roughly 5–10 minutes per partner. It works best when you each find a quiet moment to reflect, rather than sitting down together and filling it out at the same time. Independent entries make the combined report more meaningful.

What the Check-In Contains

Every check-in has two core sections:

  • Roses — what's been good. The moments, patterns, and qualities in your relationship that have felt strong, warm, or connecting since your last check-in.
  • Thorns — what's created friction. The areas where things have felt harder, where you've felt distant, or where a pattern keeps coming up that you'd like to address.

Both sections are open-ended. There are no right answers, and there's no minimum or maximum. Write as much or as little as feels true — even a few honest lines carry more signal than a thorough but guarded entry.

Check-In Timing

If you've chosen a weekly cadence, your check-in prompt appears on Sunday. If you've chosen monthly, it appears on the 1st of the month. You have a 48-hour window to complete your entry before the cycle is marked as missed for that period.

If Only One Partner Submits

The combined report waits until both partners have submitted. You won't see a partial report — the report only generates when both entries are in. If your partner hasn't submitted yet, you can send a gentle reminder directly from the Chosen tab using the nudge feature. It sends a simple in-app notification — not a text, not an email — just a soft tap on their shoulder.

If the window closes before both partners submit, that cycle is recorded as incomplete. Your streak and pattern history simply skip that period — it's not penalized, just noted.

Common questions about this topic

What if my partner doesn't complete their check-in?
The combined report won't generate until both partners have submitted. From the Chosen tab you can send a gentle in-app nudge. If the window closes without both entries, the cycle is marked as incomplete and your check-in history reflects a gap. There's no penalty — just a missing data point for that period.
Can we do extra check-ins between scheduled ones?
Not as a formal Chosen check-in — the structured cycle runs on your chosen cadence. However, both partners can use Yvette individually for reflection at any time, and you can initiate a shared coaching conversation from the Chosen tab outside of a check-in cycle.
How long does the combined report take to generate?
Usually within a minute or two of the second partner submitting. You'll get an in-app notification when it's ready. If it takes longer than five minutes, try pulling down to refresh the Chosen tab.
Can we change our check-in cadence after we've started?
Yes. Either partner can propose a cadence change from Chosen → Settings → Check-In Cadence. The change takes effect after both partners confirm it. Any in-progress cycle finishes on the original schedule before the new cadence begins.
Does the check-in window expire?
Yes — you have 48 hours from when the check-in prompt appears to complete your entry. After that, the cycle closes. If your partner submitted but you didn't, the cycle is marked as one-sided and no combined report generates for that period.
